All vehicles on the road in Maryland are required to be carry valid insurance; however, not all auto insurance policies are the same. Here are some relevant elements of auto insurance in MD. Not all types are required for all vehicles, and you can often take your pick based on what you need from your policy and what you can afford. Here are some of the most common types of auto insurance coverage.

Liability

Liability insurance pays for the damage to the vehicle if you are responsible for an accident. It is one of the only types of auto insurance in MD that is legally required to be on every vehicle. Most other types are optional but have their benefits.

Personal Injury Protection

Personal injury protection pays for your medical expenses if you are injured in an accident. Some policies also include payment for lost earnings, funeral expenses or other costs that may crop up if the policy holder is killed or incapacitated by their injuries.

Auto Insurance MDCollision

Collision insurance pays for damage done to your vehicle in an accident where you are at fault. This is often a good idea on newer or more expensive vehicles, but may not prove cost effective on older vehicles that are likely to be totaled in the event of a wreck.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive auto insurance protects your vehicle against damage caused by things other than accidents. These may include fire, weather, theft, or vandalism.
